Jon Hamm and Zach Galifianakis Kick Off Bonnaroo Superjam
Bonnaroo’s late-night Superjams are always filled with special treats and surprise combinations, and last night’s was no exception.
Curated by Pretty Lights, Run-D.M.C.’s Darryl McDaniels and Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo, the Saturday night special was billed as an Eighties-themed “Throwback Superjam Dance Party.” The first (very Eighties) surprise came at the outset, as unscheduled guests Jon Ham and Zach Galifianakis appeared onstage to sing “We Are the World,” as Stereogum reports. (The pair were on hand after performing a surprise comedy set earlier in the day.)
Chance the Rapper turned up the heat with a medley of covers moving from DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s “Summertime” to the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy,” then returned to the stage at the end of the night for Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison” and Montell Jordan’s “This is How We Do It.” The evening’s other collaborations included Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff duetting with SZA on Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure,” McDaniels covering Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” with Jason Huber from Cherub, and Huber singing Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” with Corey Feldman. The eclectic lineup also featured Reggie Watts, Jamie Lidell, Eric Krasno, John Medeski, Karl Denson, Oteil Burbridge, Brian Coogan and Rhiannon Giddens.
Last year’s Superjam, curated by Skrillex, became the subject of an eight-part documentary series that went behind the scenes and tracked just how the event came together.
