Since releasing his self-titled debut in 1983 at 17 years old, Johnny Gill has been a mainstay in R&B music, recording respected works as a solo artist as well as a member of staple groups New Edition and LSG, earning Grammy nominations for each.
After taking a 16-year break from solo albums, in 2011, he returned with his sixth set, Still Winning, and continues the momentum with his latest, Game Changer.
Johnny offered a preview of his new record during a recent visit to Yahoo Music. Accompanied by two guitarists, the R&B legend performed an intimate, acoustic rendition of the new title track and “Lady Dujour,” a classic from his 1990 double-platinum set.
After his Yahoo performance, Johnny discussed the sound of the new album, including the song and video for “Behind Closed Doors” that features Nicole Murphy, his longtime friend and Hollywood Exes star. Johnny explained how being friends with Nicole and her ex, Eddie Murphy, played a role in the storyline for the music video.
Johnny also recalled pivotal moments from his career. He explained how childhood friend and singer Stacy Lattisaw was instrumental in helping him land his first record deal. He remembered what it was like joining New Edition after Bobby Brown’s controversial exit. Plus, he talked about the loss of LSG member Gerald Levert and what it is like having Gerald’s father, O’Jays singer Eddie Levert, sometimes perform in his son’s place.
