Johnny Cash Album Trailer Features Previously Unheard Song

A snippet of ‘She Used to Love Me a Lot’ plays in 40-second preview of lost LP

On March 25th, the estate of Johnny Cash will put out a previously unreleased LP that the rock and country firebrand recorded in the early Eighties. Today, it released a trailer for the album, Out Among the Stars, which contains 12 never-before-heard studio recordings, including duets with June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings.

Johnny Cash and 14 More Rock & Roll Rebels

The trailer opens with commentary by Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, who recalls finding the recordings. “They were beautiful,” he says. The only music included in the 40-second teaser is a snippet of the track “She Used to Love Me a Lot,” a moody and acoustic tribute to a lost love. As the Man in Black’s baritone bellows the title line, a guitar moans, echoes and quivers.

Cash recorded the album’s tracks in two sessions, one in 1981 and another in 1984, both with producer Billy Sherrill for Columbia Records. It languished in vaults for years, and the label says that it forgot about the recordings after Cash released his final Columbia LP, Rainbow, in 1985. John Carter Cash discovered the tapes in 2012 while cataloguing his parents’ recordings in Hendersonville, Tennessee and at the Sony Music Archives.

“We were like, my goodness, this is a beautiful record that nobody has ever heard,” John Carter Cash told the Associated Press. “Johnny Cash is in the very prime of his voice for his lifetime. He’s pitch-perfect.”
