Jarvis Cocker to Judge Pulp Karaoke Contest in New York City

Jarvis Cocker will be on hand to help judge a Pulp karaoke contest in New York City following a special screening of Florian Habicht’s new documentary about the Britpop outfit, Pulp: A Film About Life, Death and Supermarkets on August 7th, The Guardian reports.

Those up for the monumental task of serenading the Pulp frontman with his own music can enter the competition by tweeting event organizers Rooftop Films which song they’d like to perform and why by August 4th, along with the hashtag #singforjarvis. Tickets for the event at Industry City have already sold out, so the only way to get in is to come up with a brilliant reason why your rendition of “Common People” will impress Cocker.

That said, organizers don’t want a million people belting the band’s biggest hit, though it is on the list of 10 potential numbers, which also includes: “All Time High,” “Babies,” “Disco 2000,” “Do You Remember the First Time,” “Help the Aged,” “Mile End,” “Monday Morning,” “Sorted for E’s & Wizz” and “This Is Hardcore.” Rooftop Films suggests funny drawings, a relevant YouTube video or something totally out of left field — anything “that will make us notice you and think you’re a special and unique snowflake.”

Cocker will be doing a Q&A with fans as well, but organizers cheekily stressed the importance of actually showing up if you’re selected. “If you can’t be there on August 7th, don’t enter the contest!” Rooftop Film stipulates. “Jarvis will be very mad at you. Do you really want that on your conscience?”
