Indie Rockers Honored at ‘Our Band Could Be Your Life’ Concert

Tenth anniversary of book about independent music will be celebrated with show also featuring St. Vincent, Titus Andronicus, tUnE-yArDs, Ted Leo and members of Dirty Projectors

Music critic Michael Azerrad will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of his book Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991 with a special concert at Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom on May 22nd. The bill will feature several contemporary artists selected by Azzarad who will perform the music of the 13 bands featured in the book. So, for example, Titus Andronicus will play the music of the Replacements, tUnE-yArDs will interpret the songs of Sonic Youth, St. Vincent will cover Big Black and Ted Leo will do a set of Minor Threat numbers.

The concert will also include members of Dirty Projectors performing music by Black Flag. The band had previously paid tribute to Black Flag on their album Rise Above, which was comprised of new compositions based on songwriter David Longstreth’s fading memories of their record Damaged. It looks like this time around Longstreth and company will actually be playing the Black Flag tunes straight.
