In the Studio: Flaming Lips Prep New Album
The Oklahoma City psychedelic-pop band has started piecing together an album for release next year. “I’d call our new stuff progressive Dixieland – elements of country with futuristic jazz,” says singer Wayne Coyne, with a laugh. “There’s banjos in it. When you say all those things together, it sounds horrible. But it’s a new path for us.” Impatient fans can look for a cover of Devo‘s “Gates of Steel” for an upcoming compilation and the surprisingly light and funky “Patrick and SpongeBob Confront the Pyschic Wall of Energy” for the SpongeBob SquarePants movie. Says Coyne, “That sounds like a Flaming Lips song already, doesn’t it?”
