Iggy Pop, Danger Mouse Co-Write Song for New Movie, ‘Gold’
Iggy Pop and Danger Mouse collaborated on “Gold,” a new song featured in the upcoming Matthew McConaughey drama about a geologist searching for gold in Indonesia. Pop and Mouse co-wrote the track with director Stephan Gaghan and composer Daniel Pemberton. They previously worked together on Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse’s 2010 album, Dark Night of the Soul.
“This beautiful and unpredictable film spoke to me of violence, desire, destiny, lust and the inescapable twists of fate,” Pop said in a statement. “The actors and the story spun a web of excitement that left me spent and breathless, so I tried to perform the vocal with that feeling in mind … I found myself at a new level of communication, standing there in the studio with Steve Gaghan and Danger Mouse, singing ‘Gold’ – a song for our times.”
Gaghan – best known for writing and directing 2005’s Syriana and writing 2000’s Traffic – makes his songwriting debut with “Gold.” In a statement, he said that Pop’s voice “has the soul of the country and is perfect for our film.”
In March, Pop released his 17th LP, the Josh Homme-featured Post Pop Depression, which ranked at Number 45 on Rolling Stone‘s 50 Best Albums of 2016 list. Pop has also been involved in several projects relating to his band, the Stooges: a new book titled Total Chaos (Third Man Books) and a Jim Jarmusch-directed documentary, Gimme Danger.
“I would call it karmic,” Pop recently told The New York Times of the documentary. “I asked Jim seven or eight years ago if he would make a movie about the Stooges. The idea was to do something surprising with it, and I was surprised when I first saw it. Imagine my horror when the film starts out and we’re all living with our mothers.”
