Iggy Azalea, Taylor Swift Blend Perfectly in Giddy Year-End Mash-Up
Iggy Azalea, Lorde, Meghan Trainor and Taylor Swift complement each other perfectly in DJ Earworm’s giddy, just-released “United State of Pop 2014” mash-up. As usual, the California producer’s annual pop mega mix combines 25 of the biggest hits of the past calendar year, including the above singers’ “Fancy,” “Team,” “All About That Bass” and, of course, “Shake It Off,” respectively. It also features snippets of DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What,” Ariana Grande’s “Problem,” A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera’s “Say Something” and Magic!’s “Rude” among many others.
“The thing that has been most notable in the past two or three years is the decline of EDM,” Earworm told Billboard, which premiered the new mix. “The ‘United State of Pop’ became this dance track from ’09 to ’12, and then starting last year, there just wasn’t enough in that genre to fully support it, so I went down-tempo.
“And this year, ‘Timber,’ which was popular in January, is the only popular dance track I’m dealing with,” he continued. “It’s definitely down-tempo, so you have to decide, how is this going to go? How am I going to maintain the energy levels while being true to the sound of the year?”
The producer, who has been making the annual mash-up since 2007, called this year’s the “most blended instrumental I’ve been able to achieve yet.” Last year’s mix featured tracks by everyone from Avicii to Miley Cyrus, while the previous year’s blended Adele with Flo Rida. Ultimately, he described the 2014 mix as being “more diverse” and “definitely softer” than previous installments.
