The formerly anonymous electronic-music producer Zhu is ending his Genesis Series in a big way. The final track from the series, “Working for It,” features none other than Skrillex, as well as Zhu’s Mind of a Genius labelmates They. Hear the exclusive premiere of the song below.
Los Angeles duo They sing on the DJ collaboration, which pairs hypnotic house elements with some dubstep-style wubs. The track is a perfect marriage of Zhu and Skrillex’s dynamic, richly layered styles.
Zhu originally debuted a snippet of “Working for It” during his set at CRSSD Festival earlier this month. For fans of both DJs, the collaboration had been highly anticipated following a surprise appearance by Skrillex during Zhu’s set at Australia’s Stereosonic Festival in 2014. At the time, Zhu’s identity was still shrouded in secrecy, and many left the set believing that Zhu was actually Skrillex in disguise, a rumor that was quickly refuted.
Zhu has rolled out his Genesis Series during the past six weeks. Aside from Skrillex, he’s collected a star-studded cast of collaborators, revealed through a cryptic word hunt on the Generation Why website. AlunaGeorge, A-Trak, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Daniel Johns have all contributed to tracks in the series. The AlunaGeorge-assisted “Automatic” — Zhu’s follow-up to the wildly successful “Faded” off his debut EP, The Nightday — has hit the Top 100 in Australia.
Currently, Zhu’s only scheduled North American tour date is at Voodoo Festival in New Orleans on Halloween. Skrillex has various solo and Jack Ü appearances lined up for the rest of year.
