Wyclef Jean has debuted “Hendrix,” the first single off his upcoming album Carnival III: Road to Clefication. Out this fall, Carnival III will be his first album in seven years.

The song reflects on Jean’s childhood, listening to Jimi Hendrix and growing up with little money. While his cousin had dreams more like Pablo Escobar, Jean wanted to be a rock star.

“This speaks to the neighborhood I grew up in and how it didn’t look like much,” he told Complex, where the track was premiered. “The devil, or the streets, offered drugs and cartel and I chose music. Some homies chose the NBA, or we would see people like Shaq who are from Newark and see how they made it out the danger zone.”

Jean’s last full-length release was 2009’s From the Hut, to the Projects, to the Mansion. Carnival III is the final part of a trilogy that began with his 1997 debut album Carnival and was followed by 2007’s Carnival Vol. II: Memoirs of an Immigrant. Avicii, Afrojack and Emeli Sandé will be featured on his latest album.
