Kat Perkins formed a close bond with late singer Christina Grimmie during their time as roommates on The Voice Season Six. Upon learning of Grimmie’s horrific shooting earlier this month, the singer found herself in shock. “Not sure what to do, I decided to honor her the only way I know how,” Perkins tells Rolling Stone. “With a song.” The musician funneled her grief into uplifting piano ballad “Angels,” available to stream above.
The song finds Perkins belting lines like “We’re all temporary from the time we’re born” and “There must be angels watching over you” over soulful piano chords and sighing trumpet.
Grimmie, 22, was shot and killed on June 11th while signing autographs after a concert in Orlando, Florida. The gunman, 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl, fatally shot himself after Grimmie’s brother Marcus tackled him to the ground.
“Christina was a beautiful person inside and out,” Perkins says in a statement. “I will miss her bubbly personality, quirkiness and talent. I wanted to honor her the only way I know how, with a song. Fly on, sister. This is a tribute to her and those lost that same weekend in the Orlando Shooting. May we find a way to move forward in life making peace while letting go of evil. #ChooseLove“
All proceeds from “Angels” will benefit Grimmie’s GoFundMe, which benefits the the late singer’s family. After that fund expires, Perkins will donate the proceeds to a scholarship set up by Grimmie’s family with her former New Jersey high school.
