Ty Segall, the prolific garage rocker, unveiled a wispy new love song, “Orange Color Queen,” dedicated to his girlfriend. The song is the first offering from his upcoming self-titled record, out January 27th via Drag City.

The primarily acoustic cut feels like an odd choice for Segall, who tends to explore avant-garde areas of rock and roll. But his billowy guitar style and vague falsetto imbue the song with an aura of psychedelia. Halfway through, the drums kick in and Segall plays a solo that places “Orange Color Queen” in the same realm as his delightfully scuzzy 2011 LP, Goodbye Bread.

“This is a love song for my girlfriend, Denée,” Segall told NPR Music, where the song premiered. “I’ve written her many, but I think this is my favorite. I travel around the world for a living and have developed a slight fear of flying. She’s one of the things that makes it better for me to travel. Especially when she is with me. She has orange hair, and is my orange color queen. I rarely write songs like this, because it is so easy to sound disingenuous, but I think this one is pretty good.”

Ty Segall follows the California rocker’s 2016 LP, Emotional Mugger. Segall is performing across North America from January through May 2017.
