Hear the Game Pay Homage to Ice-T, Eviscerate Meek Mill

The Game takes listeners back to the Nineties on “True Colors/It’s On.” “To understand my life you have to understand what I’ve been through, live where I’ve lived and watch lives of people you loved get erased because of their colors,” the Compton MC noted in a statement. He raps about his birth, the Chicago Bulls drafting Michael Jordan and the constant presence of gang violence in his life. The new single will appear on 1992, which is slated for an October 14th release. 

“True Colors/It’s On” features a vigorous beat by Bongo Da Drum Gawd. In an homage to an earlier generation of west coast rappers, Bongo samples Ice-T’s “Colors,” a bone-cracking track from 1988. The producer updates that song’s trademark buzz with rapid-fire modern drum programming.

“‘1992’ was inspired by what was going on in my life, my city and the world when I was 12-years-old,” the Game said. “Crips and Bloods were pulling me in both directions and joining one of the gangs was almost a normality for a young African American male growing up in Compton and the surrounding areas of Los Angeles County.”

“Rodney King getting abused by the cops was an unforgettable incident and caused mass hysteria worldwide,” the rapper added. “The famous OJ Simpson car chase/trial was a huge worldwide televised situation that racially divided a country. These are some of the many topics based around my childhood touched on in this album.”

While the Game is drawing inspiration from his youth, he hasn’t forgotten about the present: on Friday morning, he also debuted a chest-puffing tune called “92 Bars.” The Game appears to take aim at Meek Mill on the song: “Blood will be drippin’ like Niagara if I poke Meek.” “You know that I’ll snap you like a toothpick,” the Game raps later. “And snitching on niggas ain’t never been no cool shit.”

According to TMZ, the Compton MC also called out Mill during a show in Miami on Thursday night. On Friday morning, TMZ reports that shots were fired outside of the Fontainebleau Hotel, where several vehicles belong to the Game and his associates were parked. The Game’s manager told TMZ that the rapper’s cars were not hit by the gunfire. 

The Game has been prolific lately: he released two albums, The Documentary and The Documentary 2.5, last October.
