Hear Tegan and Sara Navigate Love Triangles on New Song ‘Boyfriend’

Tegan and Sara took to Beats 1 radio to premiere a new sugar-coated anthem, “Boyfriend,” the first offering from their upcoming album, Love You To Death.
The track finds Tegan and Sara further exploring the bombastic pop stylings of their 2013 album, Heartthrob. The synths beam and blare over thundering percussion, while Sara Quin belts the song’s charmingly cheeky and lovestruck hook.
As Quin explained to DJ Matt Wilkinson, the song details a love triangle she found herself in with a woman who not only hadn’t dated another girl before, but was still seeing another man.
“I think that’s pretty relatable,” she said of the conceit. “Obviously, being gay, there’s sort of a bit of a gender twist in the song, and I get that that sometimes doesn’t seem immediately relatable to everybody, whether they’re straight or whatever. But this idea, you know, that we’ve all been in that situation where we really like someone and we want to make it official, and they’re not ready, that’s what the song is about.”
Love You to Death is set to arrive on June 3rd and marks Tegan and Sara’s eighth studio album. The duo reunited with producer Greg Kurstin, who played a major role on Heartthrob, Tegan and Sara’s most successful album to date.
