Hear St. Vincent Turn ‘Golden Girls’ Theme Into Eerie Dirge

Annie Clark posts clip on Twitter with hashtag #thankyouforbeingafriend

Experimental guitarist Annie Clark, who performs as St. Vincent, gave an eerie tribute to Golden Girls at a performance over the weekend by transforming the sitcom’s theme song (Cynthia Fee’s “Thank You For Being A Friend”) into a solemn dirge. Clark tweeted the clip with the hashtag #thankyouforbeingafriend.

Further evidence proves that Blanche, Rose, Sophia and Dorothy are indie rock’s preferred girl squad. In February, Animal Collective sampled the Golden Girls theme on a song called “Golden Gal” from their last LP Painting With. The song begins with an intro from the episode focusing on Betty White’s character called “Rose the Prude.”

After Clark’s extensive Digital Witness tour in support of her acclaimed 2014 album St. Vincent, the musician is moving into the visual world – although not quite like Golden Girls. Earlier this year, Rolling Stone reported that Clark will make her directorial debut with a segment in XX, an upcoming anthology horror film composed of four shorts starring and helmed entirely by women.
