California DJ Seven Lions’ “Strangers” — the glitchy, peak-hour, rising-and-falling collaboration with Myon & Shane 45 — is a straight-up hit, a favorite of both bloggers and mix-show DJs. And on his new Worlds Apart EP, the heavy-metal refugee born Jeff Montalvo supplements the track with four more. Opener “Don’t Leave” features vocals from Ellie Goulding, and both “Worlds Apart” and “Keep It Close” include cameos by Estonian singer Kerli.
“I’m really excited to put out this EP,” Seven Lions tells Rolling Stone. “It’s been a long time in the making, and I am really proud of the collaborations. It’s more experimental than the last EP and the focus is on songwriting instead of pure dance-floor aggression.” That sonic shift manifests itself in the comfortable new-age synths that open tracks like the instrumental “Nepenthe,” which are then juxtaposed with crisp drums and a dubstep-influenced climax.
Worlds Apart will be released tomorrow, April 29th, on the re-booted Casablanca Records, the label that once housed artists like Kiss and Donna Summer but now features a roster of EDM titans including Tïësto, Martin Garrix and Chase & Status. Seven Lions, meanwhile, continues to tour, headlining May dates in cities including Austin, Calgary and San Francisco.
