Hear Run the Jewels’ Cat-Sampling ‘Meow the Jewels’ Cut ‘Meowrly’

What began as a Kickstarter joke is slowly turning into a reality as Run the Jewels took to their WRTJ Beats 1 radio show Friday to debut “Meowrly,” the inaugural cut off the duo’s remix album Meow the Jewels. In September, Killer Mike and El-P aligned with a fan-created Kickstarter that pledged to recreate their acclaimed Run the Jewels 2 entirely with cat samples. “Meowrly,” remixed by and featuring Boots, is a meow-packed take on RTJ2‘s “Early” (via The Fader).
Earlier in the week, El-P hinted that the Meow the Jewels project was nearing completion when he tweeted “i just listened to 8 straight meow the jewels songs. I am now crazy.” The Kickstarter campaign raised over $45,000, with the proceeds set to benefit “the families of those who have lost their lives to police brutality this year.” Just Blaze, Dan the Automator, Prince Paul, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, Zola Jesus and Alchemist all pledged to contribute to the project if the Kickstarter goal was reached.
However, in January, El-P announced Meow the Jewels had secured its biggest guest: Internet sensation Lil Bub, whose owner contributed a library of cat sounds to the remix album. “Thank god the money is going to charity because meow the jewels is going to be the single silliest fuckin record ever recorded,” El-P tweeted at the time. No release date for the full remix album has been announced yet.
