Rick Ross released “Summer ’17” via SoundCloud on Wednesday night. The song’s directive is simple: “I want my niggas rich by summer ’17,” Ross raps over a wrecking-ball of a beat.
The song’s grim synths and rapid percussion convey Ross’s anxious determination. “I’m living reckless, it’ll never stop,” Ross asserts. “That’s why I’m beefin’ with the niggas live right up the block.”
After releasing nine records through Def Jam, Ross’s next album will come out on Epic. “My entire life I was never given choices,” the rapper explained in an open letter about the importance of his latest full-length. “I had to create this shit for myself. I had no choice but to boss up, to make it by any means necessary, to turn nothing into everything that you see in front of you today.”
“This album is more than just another project for me,” he continued. “It’s a product of strength, perseverance, and determination. Rather You Than Me is a testimony.”
Rather You Than Me does not yet have a release date.
