Hear Passion Pit’s Eclectic New Song ‘Somewhere Up There’

Synth-pop outfit unveils second track in as many days

Passion Pit unveiled a sprawling and multifaceted new song, “Somewhere Up There,” the synth pop outfit’s second release in as many days.

The track opens with a sparkling synth arpeggio that builds steadily towards the bombastic under the direction of Michael Angelakos’ warped and winding falsetto. Several minutes in, however, the track stops and restarts as an R&B-tinged instrumental grove that morphs vibrantly but also ends abruptly.

What follows is a spoken word section about the bonds between mothers and newborns that gives way to an extended atmospheric outro. After the music fades, “Somewhere Up There” closes with a voice mail from Angelakos’ mom.

“Somewhere Up There” follows “Inner Dialogue,” which Passion Pit released Monday alongside the news that Angelakos was launching a new company that would offer legal, educational and healthcare support to musicians.

Last December, Angelakos released, Merry Christmas, Mr. Fields, a holiday-themed soundtrack and “video album.” Passion Pit’s last album, Kindred, arrived in 2015.
