Hear Melvins’ Raucous Cover of the Beatles’ ‘I Want to Tell You’

Melvins’ upcoming album, Basses Loaded, finds the group’s core members jamming with a variety of four-string firebrands, ranging from Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic to Redd Kross’ Steve McDonald. The latter bassist joins frontman Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover on the band’s raucous cover of the Beatles’ “I Want to Tell You,” a George Harrison–penned cut. Where the original is a bright, jagged deep cut on Revolver’s second side, the sludge trio’s take, which premiered via The Wall Street Journal, blossoms into a heavy, undulating pop dirge punctuated by noisy keyboard hiss.
Osborne told Rolling Stone earlier this year that the album came together after Dave Grohl suggested a recording session where they would do Nirvana with the Melvins and Novoselic. But when it came time to get together, the Foo Fighter “blew it off.” “This is how we got Krist Novoselic on this record,” he said. “Had we been busy ourselves rehearsing with Dave to do this Nirvana stuff, none of this would have happened, right? So thank you, Dave. We really appreciate it.” The album is out June 3rd.
The group, which already embarked on a North American tour this year, will return in August for another seven weeks on the road. The lineup will feature Osborne, Crover and “I Want to Tell You” bassist Steve McDonald.
