Hear Meek Mill, Pusha T’s Powerful New Song ‘Black Moses’

Meek Mill and Pusha T have unveiled their powerful “Black Moses,” which features Florida R&B singer Priscilla Renea and hails from the forthcoming The Birth of a Nation: The Inspired by Album compilation.

The song opens with Renea soulfully singing about the perils of being a runaway slave as the rhythmic sounds of chains echo, mimicking that of a chain gang in the background. “Running like I know they’re coming for me/ I’m ’bout to spill enough blood to fill the Red Sea/ Feel no evil, ’bout to set my people all free/ If they crucify me/ That’s just what it’s going to be” she sings before the chorus sets in and gospel singing adds to the refrains.

Pusha T then enters the fold, furthering the song’s theme from the perspective of being on the run and the repercussions of getting caught. “They’ll just beat me ’til the sin is off/ or my skin is off,” he raps. “Some tried to run/ They got tracked down/ Now our limit’s off.”

Despite the dire circumstances, the rapper interjects redemption into a verse. “Got me shackled up in chains/ Even made me change my name/ But they couldn’t trap my mind/ This cry for freedom ain’t in vain.” Mill adds to that outlook when he raps about a quest for freedom, adding, “All them days made my body hurt/ Locked my brothers all up in a cage/ So we turn to prayer/ hoping God will work.”

The Birth of a Nation: The Inspired by Album will be released on Friday via Atlantic. Lil Wayne and Gucci Mane’s “Oh Lord” is also featured on the 16-song soundtrack as well as contributions from 2 Chainz, Vic Mensa, Nas and others. The film The Birth of a Nation, an historical drama covering Nat Turner’s slave rebellion, premieres in theaters on October 7th.
