Maroon 5 bring the heat harshly on new single “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt Like a Motherfucker,” singer Adam Levine’s takedown on a girl who has become too self-involved. The song will appear on the upcoming deluxe edition of their 2014 album V.
“I see her when I go to sleep/I check my phone when I am weak,”Levine sings in the pre-chorus of the bitter track. “She never posts anything deep/’Cause she’s so fancy.” A lyric video accompanies the new single and features shots of typical summertime scenes, like beach trips and baseball, rather than anything mean. The track features a beat that sounds as thick as humidity feels, playing off the synth-pop sound Maroon 5 have been experimenting with since 2012’s Overexposed.
Since its release, V has spawned several hits. “Maps,” “Animals” and “Sugar” have all reached the Top Ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The latter two tunes received big-name remixes as well, with Big Boi adding a verse to “Animals” and Nicki Minaj name-checking a number of sweets in her take on “Sugar.”
Earlier this year, Levine and fellow Voice coach Gwen Stefani sang “My Heart Is Open,” another track off V, at the Grammy Awards in a much more subdued setting and vibe than either artist is typically known for. In April, the band finished up the North American leg of their tour and will be kick off the European dates later this month.
Maroon 5 will debut “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt” on The Voice on May 19th.
