Hear Koan Sound’s Skrillex-Approved ‘Dynasty’ EP – Premiere

Of the four songs on Koan Sound’s new Dynasty EP (premiered below and scheduled to be released by Skrillex’s OWSLA label) only the first pair suggest the duo’s dubstep origins: On “7th Dimension” blasts of distorted bass shake the track from its tight electro funk, while on the second, “Dynasty,” the bass constitutes the groove while plucked Eastern strings provide light ornamentation. “We have an interest in Eastern culture – Japanese culture specifically,” they tell Rolling Stone, on the phone from their native U.K., citing the influence of “growing up with computer games and anime.”

The EP turns, then, with “Infinite Funk” a track as straight-forward as the title suggests and concludes with “Lost in Thought,” which could pass for ambient new age until drums interrupt to guide it back to the dance floor. It’s hard to imagine hearing tracks like this in a club, but the group’s members claim that they were made for just that purpose. “We jump all over the place in terms of genres and BPMs when we play out,” they explain. Either way, the new songs will be out tomorrow, and in less than a month, they will be put to the test on a North American tour.
