Jhené Aiko returns with the wild new solo single “Maniac.” The R&B star is working simultaneously on her own solo album as well as on the debut album for Twenty88, her duo with rapper Big Sean.
“Maniac,” the presumed lead single off her forthcoming album, has Aiko sing-rapping over a trap-infused beat. While maintaining her mellow bedroom R&B sound, Aiko sounds more aggressive than in previous songs. “Have you ever fucked with a maniac, maniac,” she sings on the chorus. “You just made love to a maniac, maniac.”
“Maniac” is part of an art project that involves Aiko being tied up in rope, as seen in the single’s cover art and a video debuted on Billboard. For the project, she worked with photographer and director Steven Taylor and a master in the art form of Japanese bondage called shibari. “This is something that the Japanese do and it’s decorative tying,” Aiko explained in an interview with Billboard. “They do it for sensual purposes too, but it’s a true art form. I have this kinky spirit sometimes. If something looks a little painful, then I’m like ‘Yeah, I wanna try that.'”
