Hear Jack White Perform New Song ‘Temporary Ground’ Live

Jack White has debuted the previously unheard song “Temporary Ground” from his upcoming album, Lazaretto, playing the song live for the first time when he headlined the Free Press Summer Festival in Houston Sunday night. The singer/guitarist dedicated the song to American folklorist Mack McCormick before launching into the country-infused duet. He also performed “High Ball Stepper,” the snarling instrumental lead single, for which he previously released a music video.

This is the fourth song to emerge from Lazaretto: After “High Ball Stepper,” White released the title track “Lazaretto” by pressing the world’s fastest record at Third Man Records for Record Store Day and also shared an exclusive premiere of “Just One Drink” with Rolling Stone.

White’s Houston stop was just one of many upcoming dates for his summer tour in support of the new album. Lazaretto has been over a year and a half in the making, as he revealed in his cover story with Rolling Stone, with some of the tracks inspired by short stories he wrote when he was 19.

“I did a lot of things we hadn’t done before,” White said. “Like, we’d record three live versions of a song and move on — ‘I’ll figure it out later.'” White has also put two hidden tracks and embedded a hologram on the “Ultra” LP version.

Over the weekend, White took to his website to release a lengthy statement apologizing for comments he made about the Black Keys and Meg White, among others, in a recent Rolling Stone cover story. In the story, White criticized the Black Keys’ originality: “I’ll hear TV commercials where the music’s ripping off sounds of mine, to the point I think it’s me. Half the time, it’s the Black Keys.”

Lazaretto will be released on June 10th.
