Hear Ghostface, RZA and Raekwon Team for Noir ‘Return of the Savage’

One-third of the Wu-Tang Clan have teamed up with producer Adrian Younge for a moody, new Spaghetti Western–influenced track, “Return of the Savage.” The track will appear on the sequel to Ghostface Killah‘s 2013 LP Twelve Reasons to Die – 12 Reasons to Die II – and features appearances by the Staten Island crew’s Raekwon and RZA. The LP is due out in July, according to Okayplayer. The track also appears on the compilation Linear Labs: Los Angeles, which contains songs from Younge’s Linear Labs label.

After a soaring soprano line reminiscent of an Ennio Morricone soundtrack, Ghostface explains, “It’s time for a new chapter/Twelve more reasons to die,” before he gives Raekwon the mic for a verse about revenge. The rapper describes a scene about how a mobster named DeLuca killed his wife and kids, so he approached them: “When they realized the real live G was about to serve ’em,” he rapped, “60 pieces blew through his jaw, closing his curtains.”

Ghostface then gives his account, rapping about hearing records spinning and early Seventies New York – dovetailing into the track’s jazzy drums and soul overtones – as he talks about being a vigilante. RZA closes the track out with a narration about how Ghostface would be teaming with a character named Lester Kane to take on Lou DeLuca.

Ghostface and Raekwon will be hitting the road together in July, though so far it has been described only as a trek celebrating the 20th anniversary of Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.

Raekwon, who recently put out his latest album Fly International Luxurious Art, is also working on a crowdfunded documentary about the album, which he is is looking to get the movie made via a crowd-funding campaign. “Our vision for the film is for it to be as honest as possible, removing the filter from both ourselves and participants,” the rapper told Rolling Stone in March. “I plan to take viewers on a ride through the album from beginning to end. Beyond revealing untold information about the project and how it was created, the film will also bring to life the actual movie that happens within the album.”
