Hear Danger Mouse’s Dizzying Remix of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’

This week marks the 10th anniversary of Gnarls Barkley‘s St. Elsewhere, and to celebrate, Danger Mouse – the production half of the duo he formed with Cee Lo Green – has been uploading photos and other artifacts of the era. On Wednesday, the producer born Brian Burton unearthed his “rejected” remix of the album’s standout single “Crazy,” a dizzying version of the Grammy-winning track.

“Just got this remix of Crazy I did rejected. Label didn’t think it would get any new fans I guess,” Danger Mouse wrote on social media of the remix. It’s unclear whether the remix was originally earmarked for St. Elsewhere or created to accompany the single’s release, but the unused version plays closer to the song’s lyrics, with Green’s hollowed-out, distant vocals hovering over a spooky sample and brief horn blasts.

Gnarls Barkley last released The Odd Couple in 2008. Danger Mouse, who recently finished up studio work on the upcoming Red Hot Chili Peppers album, has relayed to Green that he wants to reunite with the singer at some point in the future.

In October, Green said, “I just talked to [Danger Mouse] last night. I told him, ‘This is the next thing we should do.’ I know he’s about to do the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ album. I hope he does great with that, but I said, ‘Hey, I need you to be able to split your attention. We need another Gnarls album and so do the people.’ We just have to set aside the time.”

Green also said of Gnarls Barkley in a recent interview with A-Sides, “We are in talks and in a high hopes to do another project in a very near future. I’d like to do another one. We both would.”
