Hear Childish Gambino’s Sprawling, Grooving New Song ‘Me and Your Mama’
Donald Glover has unveiled his new Childish Gambino song, “Me and Your Mama.” The tune hails from his forthcoming album, Awaken, My Love!, which is expected to be released next month.
The six-minute, three-part song begins quietly and builds to a soulful, grooving affair with a female gospel-tipped chorus, before it ratchets up into a stomping blues-funk second passage where Gambino’s passionate vocals kick in. “Do what you want/ I’m telling you/ Let me into your heart/ Can’t stand it, backhanded/ They want to see us falling apart/ You know that I love you/ So let me into your heart,” he sings, eschewing rap in favor of a raw, intense approach.
Following the cacophonous midpoint, the song culminates with winding instrumentals, ushering in a cathartic ending to the sprawling composition.
The song is the first track on the rapper’s upcoming third LP. The follow-up to 2013’s Because the Internet, Awaken, My Love! will have 11 tracks, according to its iTunes preview page. It’s due December 2nd via Glassnote.
The actor-rapper stars in FX’s Atlanta, which was recently renewed for a second season. Glover has also been cast to portray Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise’s upcoming Han Solo standalone film, which is slated for release in 2018.
