Hear Bryan Ferry Get Wistful With Johnny Marr on ‘Soldier of Fortune’

Three tracks into Bryan Ferry‘s new album, the former Roxy Music frontman gets reflective, singing lines like, “I was walking down the street, and I saw you in the rain/It’s breaking my heart, and I want you back again” as he builds toward a chorus that ends, “I had the world on a string and I threw it all away.”
The album, titled Avonmore, is Ferry’s first collection of new material since 2010’s Olympia, and the song, “Soldier of Fortune,” available below, features Johnny Marr helping out with Red Hot Chili Peppers-esque acoustic guitar riff. Aside from Marr, Avonmore includes guests like Nile Rodgers, Ronnie Spector, Mark Knopfler and Norwegian dance producer Todd Terje, whose plodding “Johnny and Mary” collaboration (previously released on his own It’s Album Time! LP) closes the record.
“We recorded a sketch that was a bit similar to the original,” Terje told Rolling Stone earlier this year. “Then he re-recorded it with a band at half-tempo, which resembled my version remotely, and then I changed the instrumentation, which led him to re-record the vocals. It seemed natural, like he was responding to my music and I was responding to his vocals.”
Avonmore will be released November 17th and can be pre-ordered here.
