Hear Bruno Mars’ Romantic New Song ‘Versace on the Floor’

Pop star sings earnestly on sultry track from forthcoming album ’24K Magic’

Bruno Mars dances with his lover underneath a chandelier on “Versace on the Floor,” off his upcoming album 24K Magic. “We’re dancing all alone/ There’s no reason to hide/ What we’re feeling inside,” Mars purrs in his innocent soprano.

“Versace on the Floor” is exactly about what the song title suggests. It’s Mars’ shimmery ode to the champagne flutes and rose petal-romance of Philly soul bands like the Stylistics. “Girl you know you’re perfect/ From your head down to your heels,” Mars sings devotionally, cranking his voice up a notch just like Russell Thompkins, Jr. The production values borrow distractingly from the Nineties – 1995 specifically – sounding cherry-picked from Selena’s “Dreaming of You” and Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.”

Mars spoke at length about “Versace on the Floor” in the current Rolling Stone cover story, using the track as a way of illustrating his perfectionist approach to crafting his music. “I could play you six different versions of this song,” he revealed before going through the song’s journey, playing a “poolside version” that featured lyrics like “fly through a storm on a unicorn … Make love on a mountain, bathe in a fountain.”

From there, Mars worked through both the lyrics and the beat, remixing and rewriting until he reached the final “Boyz II Men-ish anthem” that appears on the album. “At a certain point, I needed to stop telling you we’re gonna get down, and just get down,” he noted. 24K Magic will be released on November 18th.
