“Just come and get it, let them say what they say,” Ariana Grande boasts on her brash new track, “Focus.” “Cause I’m about to put them all away.” The lead single from the singer’s upcoming third LP, Moonlight, is built on stabbing big-band brass, slick synths and clanging percussion. “I can tell you’re curious / It’s written on your lips,” she sings. “Ain’t no need to hold it back / Go ‘head and talk your shit.”
The “Focus” video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, finds Grande dancing in front of backgrounds both neon and black-and-white – a possible reference to the retro-modern style of the track itself. Near the clip’s end, Grande mimes a trumpet in front of a fake brass section.
The Max Martin-produced track was written by an all-star team: Grande, Ilya Salmanzadeh (Grande’s “Problem,” Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do”), Savan Kotecha (the Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face”), and the Cardigans’ Peter Svensson (Carly Rae Jepsen’s “I Really Like You”). The singer has yet to confirm an official release date for Moonlight, but the album is expected to arrive some time in 2016.
