Hear Animal Collective’s Jubilant Song ‘Lying in the Grass’

Psychedelic band previously debuted ‘Painting With’ track via iOS app

Animal Collective‘s newly debuted “Lying in the Grass” finds the psychedelic band at their most jubilant, with Avey Tare and Panda Bear ping-ponging their voices over a squirming synth-bass, snapping percussion and breezy saxophone. The trio previously revealed the track – a highlight from their upcoming 10th LP, Painting With – to hardcore fans via an iOS app, which offers real-time collaborative painting between two users.

Both “Lying in the Grass” and the buoyant first single “Floridada” are representative of Animal Collective’s no-frills approach to Painting With, on which they scaled back their trademark reverb and ambient interludes for shorter, more minimal tracks.

“Even [2009’s] Merriweather Post Pavillion, people were saying was our poppiest record up to that point, but there still were like long, drawn-out passages of drone,” Brian “Geologist” Weitz told Rolling Stone. “With this one we were just like in and out. No long buildups to get to it, no long outros. We talked about, like, our Ramones record.”

“Even back to like [2007’s] Strawberry Jam, we’ve wanted to do a record that was a little more close-up, direct, Beatles-y style record,” added Dave “Avey Tare” Portner.

Last year, Animal Collective announced a Painting With world tour, which kicks off February 19th in Philadelphia and ends May 14th in Sayreville, New Jersey.
