In November 1976, Rod Stewart headed to Europe to tour in support of his new album A Night on the Town. “The band and I were only just getting to know each other,” he later told the Daily Mirror. “For about three weeks I was staying out all night. Then I got sick and was existing on port and brandy, afternoon tea and toast. When we opened at Olympia [In London] I felt so bad it was almost like somebody telling me I shouldn’t be there.”

Rod Stewart and 99 more of the greatest singers of all time

Many of the British shows were professionally recorded, and there’s no sign of any distress or illness on the tapes as Stewart tears through hits like “You Wear It Well,” “Maggie May” and “This Old Heart of Mine.” Check out an exclusive stream of 13 tracks from those shows — which kick off Stewart’s new box set Live 1976 – 1998: Tonight’s the Night — right here.

The box set hits shelves on March 18th. It features handpicked live highlights from Stewart’s many tours of the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties, including a duet with Tina Turner on “Hot Legs” and covers like “People Get Ready” and “Cigarettes and Alcohol.”

We have an exclusive stream of the first disc right here, which draws entirely from Stewart’s 1976 European tour, and it’s available for pre-order here.
