Grimes Enlists Vampiric Cyberpunks for ‘Kill V. Maim’ Video

Montreal artist draws from comic books and crime dramas in new self-directed clip

Montreal art-pop star Claire Boucher, AKA Grimes, released the new video for her punchy single, “Kill V. Maim” off her fourth full-length album, Art Angels. The musician directed the video alongside her brother Mac, who also filmed the decadent clip for “Flesh Without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream.”

Shot in Toronto, the video harks back to the Neo Tokyo cityscapes of Akira, from a grubby subway station to slick, neon-lit highways. Sprinkled with Boucher’s cutesy, animated line drawings, she wreaks havoc with a pack of vampiric cyberpunks throughout town, intimidating viewers with an arsenal of brutish looks, culminating in a sensuous underground blood rave.

The images are especially fitting for a brackish, horror house track about Al Pacino’s Godfather Pt. 2 character, rewritten as a genderbending vampire. “I’m not explicitly religious,” Grimes told Rolling Stone last year. “But I think this album is about God. I feel lot more in touch with something scary and omnipotent.”
