Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Joins the Replacements at Coachella

Rocker fills in for injured Paul Westerberg

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong provided musical reinforcement for the Replacements during the band’s second Coachella weekend set on Friday night. As Billboard reports, frontman Paul Westerberg was plagued by back trouble and spent much of the set laying on a sofa while he played his guitar parts, so the upright Armstrong came in handy.

The Replacements brought Armstrong out on stage early in the set and Westerberg referred to the rocker as an “expansion” of the band. Dressed in a plaid khaki suit to match the rest of the crew, Armstrong joined them on guitar for a classics-packed set that included “Color Me Impressed,” “Can’t Hardly Wait,” “Alex Chilton” and “IOU.”

Armstrong has long professed his admiration for the Minneapolis band, and at one point told the audience, “Dreams really do come true!”

Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson reunited as the Replacements live for the first time in 22 years last August at Toronto’s Riot Fest. Their set at Coachella last weekend was their first show in California since 1991, though Billboard reports that it was sparsely attended. Friday night’s set drew a much larger audience.
