A Grateful Dead concert filmed at Bremen, Germany’s Beat Club in 1972 will get theatrical screenings across the country on July 17th, at 7:30 p.m. local time, as part of the annual “Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies.” The screening will feature a complete live studio performance with remastered audio. In addition to performances of a shorter version of their European tour song selection, the film will include all the in-studio banter that took place the day it was filmed.

20 Essential Grateful Dead Shows

The group was touring in support of its 1971 album, Grateful Dead, and recordings from the tour would later appear on the band’s live, triple LP Europe ’72. At the Beat Club, the band played favorites like “Bertha,” “Sugaree” and two versions of “Playing in the Band,” as well as a medley called, “Truckin’-Drums-The Other One.” It’s one of the last filmed concerts to feature Ron “Pigpen” McKernen, who co-founded the group and played organ and harmonica, as well as contributing backup vocals, on the tour.

“There’s never been a show from this era filmed so clearly in its entirety, and this audiovisual document captures the band at arguably their creative zenith,” Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux said in a statement. “As a Deadhead and an archivist, this is some of the most exciting footage of the Dead I’ve ever come across.” He also praised the inclusion of the 20-minute version of “The Other One.”

Tickets for the screenings are available at participating theaters and at the Fathom Events website.
