Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes, Don Was Top ‘Last Waltz’ Tribute
Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist/super-producer Don Was will helm a tribute to the Band’s famous farewell concert, The Last Waltz, April 30th at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans.
“Last Waltz New Orleans” will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the The Last Waltz, which the Band — and a slew of special guests — recorded at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco on November 25th, 1976. In 1978, the show was released as an album and concert film, directed by Martin Scorsese. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 25th at 10 am CT via Ticketmaster.
Keyboardist John Medeski, country star Jamey Johnson, bassist George Porter, Jr., Radiators frontman Dave Malone, drummer Terence Higgins and trombonist/Bonerama co-founder Mark Mullins will join Haynes and Was. Additional players will be announced in the coming weeks, while the show will also boast a handful of surprise guests.
“Last Waltz New Orleans” will also prominently feature the horn section as a tribute to late New Orleans legend, Allen Toussaint, who helped arrange the horn charts for the original 1976 concert. Toussaint died after suffering two heart attacks last November.
Haynes and Was’ New Orleans show is not the first live tribute to The Last Waltz. In 2013, members of Wilco, Guster, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Blitzen Trapper, Delta Spirit and more gathered at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York and recreated the entire 41-song show. A year prior, another group of indie heroes staged a similar event at the Warfield in San Francisco.
