Girl Talk Debuts New Song with Freeway
Girl Talk is no stranger to blurring genre lines. During a secret, sold-out show at NYC’s Brooklyn Bowl this morning, the mash-up maestro announced that he’s preparing to release a new joint EP with rapper Freeway called Broken Ankles.
“I’ve been working on a new EP and I decided I wanted to collaborate with one of my favorite rappers of all time,” Girl Talk said to the frenzied crowd in the wee hours of Sunday, October 6th.

Following a set by electronic musician Pictureplane, Girl Talk (a.k.a. Greg Gillis) transformed the warehouse space-cum-bowling alley into a balloon-filled dance fest. As sweat-drenched fans bopped alongside him onstage, the laptop whiz queued up a playlist featuring songs from previous albums like Jay Z’s “Can I Get A” (“Let It Out” on All Day) and mash-ups heard at the recent AWOL Music Festival such as Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” blended with Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time.” Recent releases like Kendrick Lamar’s “Poetic Justice” and Trinidad James’ “All Gold Everything” also made it into the fold.
Freeway then joined onstage to debut a track from the forthcoming collaborative project, rapping gruffly over Girl Talk’s pulsating beats in the as-of-now untitled number. Short on details, the rapper promised that Broken Ankles was “gonna be crazy.” After the new track, he stayed on to revisit classics from his repertoire like “What We Do” and “Flipside.” As a nice surprise, fellow Philadelphia rappers (and former Roc-A-Fella Records label mates) the Young Gunz kept the nostalgia going with a cameo performance of their 2003 hit “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop.”
After the show, Girl Talk tweeted, “My next release is a collaborative ep with FREEWAY #BROKENANKLES.” The release date is yet to be announced, but more details about the project are expected shortly. Girl Talk’s last major release was 2010’s All Day and he told MTV earlier this year that he’s also working on a new album inspired by “traditional production.”
