How do you top a glow-in-the-dark vinyl? With a marshmallow-scented record. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the 1984 cult comedy Ghostbusters, and in addition to a theatrical re-release and a recently announced reboot, the film’s soundtrack was reissued on Record Store Day in April on a glow-in-the-dark vinyl. Next up, on October 21st, Legacy Recordings will reissue Ray Parker Jr.’s classic “Ghostbusters” theme on a 12″ white vinyl housed in a marshmallow-scented puffy gatefold jacket in honor of the film’s villain, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
The 12″ was first unveiled at New York Comic Con. Run-D.M.C.‘s “Ghostbusters” rap from the film’s sequel will also feature on the 12″. The limited edition Ghostbusters: Stay Puft Edition Super Deluxe vinyl also comes with 12″ x 12″ Stay Puft 3D lenticular images from the film. The inner jacket of the gatefold, which simulates the texture of a marshmallow, includes a photo collage of the iconic scene where Stay Puft confronts the Ghostbusters. Each one of the 3,000 vinyls comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity and a 6″ Stay Puft figurine. Check out the Ghostbusters store for pre-order info.
The long-gestating Ghostbusters III was finally nixed this week as it was soon revealed that the Ghostbusters series will be completely rebooted by director Paul Feig with an all-female cast and a new origin story. “I love the first one so much, I don’t want to do anything to ruin the memory of that,” Feig said of his reboot. “So it just felt like, let’s just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn’t gone through it so it’s like, oh my God what’s going on?”
