Fricke’s Picks Radio: Magic and Loss With Lou Reed and Young Iceland

It has been a weird, cool, grim month — a feast of New York gigs by, among others, Steely Dan, Pearl Jam and the cantankerous Afro-jazz dynamo Ginger Baker; the shock of Lou Reed‘s passing on October 27th, then a healing trip to Iceland Airwaves. That is all reflected here. Stay with the blitzed MC’s intro to the Dan’s “Bodhisattva,” recorded at a 1974 show in Santa Monica, California; snuck out as a B-side, it’s a hot shot of what we missed when that band went off the road for a couple of decades – and how the Dan attacked the song the other week at the Beacon Theater. Grísalappalísa, from Reykjavík, were one of the fresh blasts I got at Airwaves; Baby in Vain, from Copenhagen, Denmark, were another. It was hard to listen to Reed’s work in the days after his death, as I wrote about him for our tribute issue. But there were songs that got me through that labor. Here are four, plus exit music.
