Flashback: ‘The Simpsons’ Turn ‘Planet of the Apes’ Into a Musical

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes exceeded expectations this weekend by grossing nearly $73 million and earning rave reviews. It made 33 percent more than 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes in its first week, and it pretty much guarantees there will be many more Apes movies in our future.

As awesome as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes may be, it’s definitely not the best resurrection of the franchise. That honor still goes to the 1996 Simpsons episode “A Fish Called Selma,” which featured Troy McClure (voiced by the legendary Phil Hartman) reviving his stalled career by appearing in a musical adaptation of The Planet of the Apes entitled “Stop the Planet of the Apes. I Want To Get Off!”

There’s been a lot of amazing musical moments on the Simpsons over the years, but they really outdid themselves with this one. It manages to combine Falco’s 1985 classic “Rock Me Amadeus” with The Planet of the Apes and breakdancing. As Homer says, “I love legitimate theater.”
