Flashback: The ‘Full House’ Gang Jams With the Beach Boys

Watch the Tanner family join the band onstage for “Kokomo” and “Barbara Ann” in 1988

Full House posed all sorts of questions that were never fully answered. How did Jesse manage to work as an exterminator, radio host, advertising executive and nightclub owner while still finding time to front Jesse and the Rippers, raise his own family and help out with his three nieces? How did Joey maintain a standup comedy career when his whole act was basically impersonating Popeye and the Tasmanian Devil? Rebecca Donaldson really had no problem raising twin boys in the attic above the home of her Wake Up San Francisco co-host?

But the most vexing questions revolve around the Beach Boys. They often materialize almost out of thin air to help the Tanner family get out of a jam, whether Jesse needs permission to record their material, their telethon needs an act or D.J. wins a radio contest to see them live and the entire band comes to pick them up and personally escort them to the show. That was the plot of “Beach Boy Bingo,” a second season episode that aired on November 11th, 1988.

Here’s video from the end of the show where the Tanner clan was brought onstage to guest on “Kokomo” and “Barbara Ann.” After all, don’t major rock groups regularly bring on the extended families of radio contest winners to jam with them and participate in a choreographed line dance?

The real reason the Beach Boys were such a big part of the Full House universe is that John Stamos has been touring with them, off and on, all the way back to 1985. You can see him playing percussion in the “Kokomo” video and he guests with them to this day.

Netflix just announced that they’re bringing back Full House 20 years after it left the airwaves. The show will center around D.J., Stephanie and Kimmy Gibbler, but don’t be surprised if the Beach Boys stop by at some point for a little jam session.
