Flashback: See Guns N’ Roses Trash MTV Set in 1987
When Guns N’ Roses stopped by MTV’s Headbangers Ball in 1987 to promote their just-released Appetite for Destruction, host Adam “Smash” made them an offer they couldn’t refuse. “You guys, as I understand it, are very well known for your interior decorating capabilities, along with the great rock & roll,” he said, captured in the video above at the 2:40 mark. “I understand you’ve redecorated many a hotel room, and as I look at this beautiful set we have here. … I’m gonna give you 30 seconds to redecorate this room. On your marks, get set, go!”
Izzy Stradlin perks up, Slash rises from his couch before the countdown begins and Steven Adler tosses a hubcap, which for some reason has been sitting next to him. Then, with the word “go,” all hell breaks loose. They yank at the lights, plunder the world backstage and Adler even throws his hubcap back at the camera. It ends with the guys throwing a coffin-shaped table over.
The band will be back at it on the road again this summer, as Axl Rose reunites with Slash and Duff McKagan (the others in this video are not confirmed as part of the reunion), and dates will hit many major cities. The gigs will kick off on April 8th in Las Vegas.
