It’s a match made in psych-rock heaven: The Flaming Lips have shared a trippy interpretation of the Beatles’ classic “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.” Lips frontman Wayne Coyne posted the six-minute cover yesterday on his Instagram account; the track was recorded as a preview of the band’s upcoming New Year’s Eve show, which will feature a set list of John Lennon-penned Beatles covers.

According to the Future Heart, the Lips’ upcoming New Year’s show (at Aspen, Colorado’s Belly Up) will feature a spread of late-period Beatles classics, all of which seem to fit the Lips’ psychedelic style. In addition to “Lucy,” the band has been rehearsing “Tomorrow Never Knows,” “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey,” “Come Together,” “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” “Across the Universe” and “Dear Prudence” – and they’ve shared rehearsal footage from those tracks on their Instagram.

The Lips have always been known for their extravagant live show (which typically features confetti, fake blood and Coyne crowd-surfing in a giant bubble), but their New Year’s festivities are typically even more extreme. In recent years, the band has performed LPs in their entirety, including Pink Floyd‘s The Dark Side of the Moon and their own 1999 classic The Soft Bulletin.

The New Year’s Eve concert schedule is very impressive – and convenient – this year. In addition to the Lips’ show, SiriusXM is broadcasting year-end shows from Arcade Fire, Gregg Allman, Pitbull, Willie Nelson and more.
