Father John Misty Plots Expansive ‘Pure Comedy’ World Tour
Father John Misty extended his upcoming Pure Comedy tour to include international and North American headlining dates for this fall. The new run spans September 13th in Boston through November 20th in Lisbon, Portugal.
The singer-songwriter recruited an eclectic group of opening acts for the trek: Emerging alt-rock artist and Ariel Pink collaborator Weyes Blood will open most of the concerts, with select shows featuring Tim & Eric comedian Tim Heidecker (April 12th in San Diego), Jenny Lewis (August 25th in Morrison, Colorado), Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson’s solo project Dams of the West (May shows in Toronto, Brooklyn and Chicago), Phosphorescent, Tennis, Adam Green, Entrance, Hamilton Leithauser and Adanowsky.
Father John Misty’s third LP, Pure Comedy, is out April 7th, followed by an initial round of tour dates launching April 12th in San Diego. He performed his scathing new song “Ballad of the Dying Man” Tuesday on The Late Show, backed by a six-person, gospel-styled choir.
Josh Tillman, the mastermind behind Father John Misty, recently spoke to Rolling Stone about self-medicating with acid, his former tenure as the drummer in Fleet Foxes, narcissism in the Internet age and why Pure Comedy is more than easy “entertainment.”
“There’s a difference between art and entertainment,” he said. “Entertainment is really about forgetting about your life, and art is about remembering your life. Sometimes remembering your life involves stronger emotions than the narcotic glow of entertainment. Jimmy Fallon is a fucking entertainer. What I’ve set out to do is more than to just entertain.”
