Farewell, Kim Fowley: A Tribute to the Original Viral Rock Star

Hear David Fricke’s playlist for the Los Angeles music icon

Kim Fowley

Kim Fowley is best remembered as the record producer for the all-female rock group the Runaways.

Kim Fowley was the original viral rock star – circulating through American popular music for almost 60 years in fine print and back channels, as a producer, arranger, songwriter and vigorously transgressive instigator. However you listen to music now, Fowley – who died January 15th at 75 after a long battle with bladder cancer – is lurking in your collection right now, on records that were historic, hysterical, ahead of their time and below the belt, often all at once. This playlist is designed to lead you to the precipice of his idea of, as he put it on a 1969 album, Good Clean Fun. It’s a long, wild leap from there.
