Fall Out Boy, Boyz II Men Tear Through ‘Motownphilly’ on ‘Kimmel’

Pop-punk and New Jack Swing supergroup closes out late-night show’s “Mash Up Monday” series

Fall Out Boy and Boyz II Men narrowed the gap between pop-punk and R&B with an outsized performance of “Motownphilly” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, closing out the show’s latest “Mash Up Monday” series.

The outfit — dubbed, naturally, “Fall Out Boyz II Men” — delivered a blistering rendition of Boyz II Men’s 1991 New Jack Swing smash. Fall Out Boy’s pummeling power chord chug gave the song some extra heft, but not so much to drown out the song’s scintillating horn riff or Boyz II Men’s indelible vocals.

No stranger to harmonies either, Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump joined Boyz II Men on the song’s chorus and final breakdown, sliding a pop-punk cry into the smooth R&B vocal mix.

Kimmel debuted the “Mash Up Monday” series in February, and it returned last month with Brad Paisley and Color Me Badd performing “I Wanna Sex You Up” as “Color Me Bradd.” In November, Kimmel also hosted Joss Stone and Stone Temple Pilots (“Joss Stone Temple Pilots”), who performed “Interstate Love Song,” and Jewel and Kool & The Gang (“Jewel & and the Gang”), who delivered a medley comprising some of the group’s greatest hits.
