Etnik Finds Imperfect Perfection in ‘Neon Daze’ – Premiere

German DJ and producer draws on look of perfume commercials

Hamburg club prodigy Etnik offers up this intriguing video for “Neon Daze,” the percolating first single from his upcoming EP of the same name, which is due out November 19th on Bitclap! and Skrillex’s OWSLA label.

The clip, directed by Anto Hinh-Thai (Gesaffelstein’s “Viol”), finds a beautiful woman decked out for a night of underground clubbing but as she walks into an abandoned warehouse, she encounters an elderly couple in a daze, a scantily clad woman with a crewcut and a hairless naked man crouched in a corner.

The 25 DJs That Rule the Earth

As for the elaborate, beat-driven song, Etnik – who takes inspiration from the likes of Boys Noize, Kraftwerk and Johann Sebastian Bach – tells Rolling Stone, “I like perfume commercials, because they’re usually very aesthetic and sophisticated, sometimes a little mysterious. I was inspired by that for ‘Neon Daze.’ I used drum samples to add that certain kind of glamour to the sound of the track. The main synth is a little off-tone, which almost makes it sound wrong. But to me this imperfection made the track completely perfect.”

EDM disciples have caught on to Etnik’s music, after a sting opening for Deadmau5 raised his profile. The 21-year old producer and DJ has since received more than 330,000 plays of the tracks and remixes on his Soundcloud channel. Next, in support of Neon Daze  which also counts titles like “Nixon,” “Vault” “La Nuit” and “Boaws”  Etnik is planning an international tour for 2014.
