Empire of the Sun have announced their third album, 'Two Vines,' which features guest spots from Lindsey Buckingham and Wendy Melvoin

Empire of the Sun will release their third studio album, Two Vines, on October 28th via Astralwerks. The album, which follows 2013’s Ice on the Dune, features contributions from Fleetwood Mac singer-guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, Wendy Melvoin (from Prince’s Revolution band), and David Bowie collaborators Henry Hey (piano) and Tim Lefebvre (bass). The group will release its first single “High and Low” on Wednesday.

Empire of the Sun (Luke Steele, Nick Littlemore) and Peter Mayes (Sia, the Killers) co-produced the album alongside regular collaborator Jonathan Sloan. The 15-track album was recorded in Hawaii and Los Angeles. “Going to Hawaii to record was the best idea,” Steele said in a statement, referencing Honolulu’s Avex Studios where Kanye West recorded 2010’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. “That was the catalyst for me. I’d spend the morning surfing, then roll in and make music into the night.”

“There was an image we talked about very early on with this record, before we wrote the title track, ‘Two Vines,’ and that was this image of a modern city overtaken by jungle, almost like mother nature taking back the planet,” added Littlemore. “All the buildings will turn back to sand. All it will be is nature again. We wanted to make something that reflected the beauty of that, and the wisdom that plants can give us about living harmoniously on this beautiful planet.”

The album concludes with a new Manny Marroquin mix of their 2008 hit “Walking on a Dream.” That track, originally featured on the band’s debut LP, was revived in January for a popular Honda Civic TV ad and cracked Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart.

Steele spoke to Rolling Stone in 2014 about the band’s early progress on vintage-sounding new material. “It’s funny, all the music we’ve been making at the moment really sounds like the 1970s,” he said. “I’d say it’s taking cues from 10cc, ELO – you know, all the greats.”
