Elton John Turning ‘Technicolor Dreamcoat’ Into an Animated Film

Elton John is teaming up with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to transform the duo’s 1969 musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat into an animated movie. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat started in a school and was the first step on the path that led to my musicals with Tim Rice,” Webber said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. “It is now being performed all over the world by a fourth generation of school kids, and a great movie can only help Joseph being part of the lives of many more.”

The film is the newest project by Elton John’s production company Rocket Productions. They are currently working on a film about Elton John’s life starring Tom Hardy as well as a sequel to 2011’s Gnomeo & Juliet entitled Sherlock Gnomes. 

Elton John and Tim Rice first teamed up in 1994 for the soundtrack to Disney’s The Lion King. The project was a huge success, winning the duo a Best Original Song Academy Award for “The Circle of Life.”

There’s no release date for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and it’s just one of many projects John is working on right now. He just kicked off his 2014 tour with a show at Youngstown, Ohio’s Covelli Centre and will be on the road through the end of the year. A film of of his Las Vegas show The Million Dollar Piano will hit theaters across America on March 18th and 26th. Also on tap is a new deluxe edition of his 1973 masterpiece Goodbye Yellow Brick Road that arrives on March 25th.
